Multi-time offshore racing world champion Stuart Hayim is preparing to break the around-Long Island powerboating record of 2 hours and 11 minutes he set on August 8, 2012 (read the story) with throttleman John Tomlinson in a 42-foot Marine Technology Inc. (MTI) catamaran powered by Mercury Racing 1350 engines. Tomlinson will join Hayim in the cockpit again, but this time around they’ll be running Hayim’s new 52-foot MTI cat powered by Mercury Racing 1650 engines. Their goal is to complete the 270-mile circumnavigation of the New York island in less than two hours.

Hayim and Tomlinson are shooting to break their own record at some point during a two-week waiting period for an optimal weather window this month. As he did in 2012, Hayim is planning on enlisting his NFL New York Jets connections—this time Jets coach Rex Ryan—for the fundraising element of the run. The beneficiary charity of choice will be either the Don Monti Cancer Center at The North Shore University Hospital that saved his life—Hayim is a cancer survivor—or the Alliance For Lupus Research, the organization supported by coach Ryan.
